“The Gift of Magi” by O.Henry

“The Gift of Magi” by O.Henry

Introduction to O. Henry

O. Henry was a famous short story writer from the United States.  He is known for writing stories with twists at the end. His stories often show the lives of ordinary people and teach lessons about love, kindness, and life. One of his best-known stories is The Gift of the Magi.

Introduction to the Story (Theme and Characters)

“The Gift of the Magi” is a short story about a poor couple, Jim and Della, who love each other very much. The story’s main theme is love and sacrifice. Even though they have very little money, they want to give special Christmas gifts to each other.

  • Della has long, beautiful hair.
  • Jim has a gold watch, which is his only treasure.

The story shows how they give up what they love the most for the person they love the most.

Plot

It is Christmas Eve. Della has only one dollar and eighty-seven cents, and she wants to buy a gift for Jim. So, she goes out and sells her hair to get money. She uses the money to buy a chain for Jim’s watch.

When Jim comes home, he is shocked to see her hair cut. Then he gives her his gift—a set of combs for her long hair. But now Della has no hair to use them. Then she finds out that Jim has sold his watch to buy the combs.

Both their gifts are now useless, but their love and sacrifice make them very special.

Philosophical Statements by O. Henry

O. Henry uses simple words to tell deep truths about life. Two important statements in this story are:

  1. "Life is made up of sobs, sniffles, and smiles, with sniffles predominating."
    • This means that life is full of joys and sorrows, but sad moments are often more than happy ones.
    • Della feels sad that she cannot buy a gift for Jim, but still tries her best out of love.
  2. "Expenses are always greater than the calculation."
    • This means that we often spend more than we plan, especially when we want to make our loved ones happy.
    • Della thought she could save money, but found it hard to manage.

These lines show the reality of life for poor people, but also the strength of their love and hope.

Conclusion

“The Gift of the Magi” is a touching story that teaches us that true love means sacrifice. Jim and Della gave up their most precious things for each other. Their gifts were not useful in the end, but their kind hearts made them wise and rich in love. O. Henry tells us that the best gifts are not bought with money, but given with love.
