Phonetics- Short Notes

STRONG FORMS AND WEAK FORMS In natural spoken English, many function words (pronouns, prepositions, auxiliary verbs, conjunctions, and articles) have two pronunciations: a strong (stressed) form and a weak (unstressed) form. Weak forms are far more common in fluent speech. Key Points: Ø   Strong form – used when the word is emphasised, at the end of a sentence, or spoken in isolation. Ø   Weak form – used in normal connected speech; typically reduced using the schwa /ə/ sound. Ø   Function words – such as 'and', 'of', 'to', 'the', 'can' are most commonly weakened. Ø   Weak forms aid fluency – they help speakers produce natural, flowing connected speech. Ø   Learners often over-stress – using strong forms everywhere sounds unnatural ...

Unlike Old Historicism (which used history just as background), New Historicism says that literature and history influence each other equally. A famous quote that defines this approach comes from Stephen Greenblatt: "There is no pure, independent history separate from the texts that produce it." Key Characteristics:...

Colonialism is when a powerful country, like Britain or France, takes over and controls a weaker country, like India, Africa, or Australia. These are the three most important thinkers in Postcolonialism: 1. EDWARD SAID Wrote the famous book "Orientali...
