"On Killing a Tree" by Gieve Patel

Introduction

Gieve Patel was an Indian poet and doctor. He loved nature and cared about the environment. In his poems, he shows how humans harm nature. His poem "On Killing a Tree" teaches us that trees are strong and should not be destroyed.

About the Poem

The poem explains how difficult it is to kill a tree. A tree is not weak. It grows slowly with the help of sunlight, water, and air. Even if we cut it, it can grow again. The poet shows that destroying a tree is a cruel and hard process.

Steps to Kill a Tree

Step 1: Hack and Chop

First, the tree is to be cut with a knife or axe. But this is not enough. The tree does not die easily. It grows again from its roots.

Step 2: Pull Out the Root

Next, the roots must be pulled out of the ground. The roots are very strong and hold the tree firmly in the soil. This step is very difficult.

Step 3: Scorching and Choking

Finally, the roots are left in the sun. They dry, burn, and slowly die. Without roots, the tree cannot live anymore.

Conclusion
The poem shows that trees are strong and full of life. It also tells us that cutting trees is harmful. We should protect trees and take care of nature.
